Movie Night - Mr. Leather
Enter the world of the Mr. Leather competition where the men compete annually for the coveted title in this revealing documentary.
Jason Garrett's fast paced debut feature is an exciting foray into the world of leathermen and, specifically, the 2003 Los Angeles Mr. Leather competition. Featuring nine diverse contestants: including an African American, a self identified "boy," and even a priest, Mr. Leather follows each of the competitors in his quest for the coveted title of the West Coast's largest leather event. In preparation for the competition the subjects carefully select outfits to showcase their style, prepare their speeches and strategize their response to the judges' interview portions, and we experience the hopes, insecurities and triumphs of these likeable and handsome men. For those who are novices to the leather community, Garrett's film provides a sexy and occasionally graphic history of a world filled with leather, kink and fellowship. Although the intense competition brings out some occasional cattiness, beneath it all, the contestants understand that they are united by their love of leather and the tightknit community that accepts and supports them. So polish up the leather, turn off "American Idol," and cheer on your favorite contestant in this wonderfully entertaining film.
